Northern New York Agriculture Development Program
2011 Projects

With $300,000 in funding now in the 2011-2012 New York State Budget, the Northern New York Agricultural Development Program is moving ahead with 2011 on-farm research and outreach projects in Clinton, Essex, Franklin, Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties. The following projects are made possible with bridging funds from the Cornell University Agricultural Experiment Station.

Alfalfa Variety Trials to Identify Brown Root Rot Resistance
Project Leaders: Dr Donald R. Viands, Julie Hansen, Gary C. Bergstrom
Project Description: Cornell University Professor Dr. Donald Viands and Research Associate Julie Hansen and Plant Pathology Professor Gary C. Bergstrom are field testing alfalfa varieties bred for brown root rot resistance. Brown root rot is a crop disease first discovered in Northern New York and now known to exist in other areas of New York as well as Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Pennsylvania, Wyoming and parts of Canada.

Breeding Alfalfa for Resistance to Alfalfa Snout Beetle
Project Leader: Dr Donald R. Viands, Cornell University
Project Description: Previous Northern New York Agricultural Development
Program-funded alfalfa snout beetle research provided the laboratory, greenhouse, and fieldwork needed to develop an inexpensive, easily-implemented control technique that is being heralded as an effective means of controlling the highly-destructive alfalfa snout beetle (ASB) crop pest. Field trials evaluating Cornell-bred ASB-resistant alfalfa varieties continue on NNY farms in 2011.

Cold Hardy Wine Grapes
Project Leader: K. Iungerman, Cornell Cooperative Extension Northeast NY Commercial Fruit Program
Project Description: Cold hardy wine grape production is a burgeoning
agricultural sector for Northern New York with more vineyards and
wineries starting up each year. Current research is focused on assisting the regional producers, who have invested thousands of dollars in vineyards, winemaking equipment and agritourism showrooms, with their grape and wine production challenges and opportunities.

Grass Biomass for Combustion
Project Leader: Dr. Jerry H. Cherney, Cornell University
Project Description: The grass biomass-for-combustion trials underway in Northern New York address the region’s potential to produce grass biomass for residential and light industrial heating needs and to reduce the region’s currently heavy reliance on outside energy sources.

Manure to Replace Starter N for Corn
Project Leader: Dr. Quirine M. Ketterings, Cornell University
Project Description: Nutrient management research evaluating ways for corn growers to reduce the use of purchased fertilizer, make better use of on-farm manure nutrient resources, and enhance agricultural stewardship continue in collaboration with the Cornell University Nutrient Management Spear Program.
