Northern New York Agricultural Development Program Research &
Education Priorities for 2007
The farmer committee directing the Northern New York Agricultural
Development Program identified the following priority areas for attention
in the 2007 funding cycle.

• Dairy Herd Management: Evaluating factors affecting milk component
production in NNY herds
• Plant Nutrient Management: Nitrogen management on corn
• Plant Nutrient Management: Phosphorous
• Soil Health & Conservation Agriculture: Assessment of soil health on NNY
dairy farms and monitoring changes in soil health in response to
management changes
• Plant Nutrient Management: Manure application on new and established
alfalfa seedings
• Dairy Environmental Management: Herd nutrition practices to decrease
nitrogen and phosphorus excretion
• Dairy Environmental Management: Measuring and controlling ammonia and
nitrous oxide emissions in various manure handling systems
• Forage Crop Production: Alfalfa fungal root rot — Evaluating resistant
strains and other control measures
• Dairy Herd Management: Controlling Klebsiella and Coliform Mastitis
• Bio-fuels: New crops for energy production
• Alfalfa Snout Beetle: Biological Control — Insecticidal fungi and

fruits and other horticultural crops
• Alfalfa Snout Beetle: Survey of infestation across NNY
• Dairy Herd Management: Case studies of successful farm-level
environmental and manure management systems (large & small farms),
including costs, neighbor relations, environmental protection
• Variety Trials: Soybeans and Small Grains, including organic
