Horticulture Crops

The production of fruits, vegetables, ornamentals and greenhouse crops is growing in Northern New York. Some 182 farms were harvesting 2,292 acres of vegetables at the time of the 2002 Census of Agriculture. Of those farms, 100 grew pumpkins, 108 produced sweet corn, and 17 were growing herbs. The Census reported 557 acres devoted to apple production and 2,866 acres for cut Christmas tree sales. The market value of the fruits, nuts and berries produced in NNY is estimated at approximately $12 million.

Cold hardy wine and table grapes offer new opportunities for Northern New York agriculture with the establishment of new vineyards and wineries in both Eastern and Western NNY in recent years. Northern New York Agricultural Development Program research is helping growers evaluate this opportunity and enhance their production of cold hardy grapes and other fruits, and vegetables.
